Having hiked the Maroon Bells in previous years, I decided to hike to
American Lake.

I was on the trail to
American Lake by 7 AM and only saw two people on my way up. The trail to was peaceful but tough, almost two miles of up. Spectacular...but not quite as breathtaking as West Maroon.
6.2 miles out and back with a bit more than 2,000 feet of elevation gain. The reward: a lake with vistas along the way.
Next year: Conundrum or Lost Man.
